2001 ford f-150 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. New supercrew is best light-duty crew cab available. introductionthe f-150 is available in every imaginable pickup truck configuration. It can act like a serious work truck, an off-road toy, or a luxurious everyday vehicle that doubles as a highly capable weekend tool. There's even a hot rod. it comes in a myriad of bed lengths, two different body styles, and now three distinct cab configurations. Crew cabs have become the big fad in compact and mid-size trucks the past couple of years, but with the exception of the tried-and-true super-long heavy-duty models, this new full-size ford crew cab is by far the most comfortable of the new trucks. Overall length is kept short by using an ultra-short bed that measures just 5 1/2 feet; though the bed is a compromise, it relieves the driver of the daily burden of maneuvering a pickup that's as long as an aircraft carrier. The supercrew is equipped like a luxury sport-utility, with power-adjustable pedals and optional moonroof, rear-seat entertainment system, and a handsome leather interior. as for the rest of the 2001 f-150 line, power-adjustable pedals are standard on all lariat models and optional on xl and xlt trim lines. Antilock brakes (abs) are standard throughout the f-150 line, and remote keyless entry is now a standard feature on xlt models. lineupthree engines are available: the standard engine is a 4. 2-liter v6 engine that generates 202 horsepower. The optional 4. 6-liter v8 produces 220 horsepower. The 5. 4-liter v8 produces 260 horsepower. And there are three trim levels: xl, xlt, and lariat. With colors and options thrown in, the model matrix is huge. walkaroundthe f-150 is a stylish truck, with much more attention paid to aerodynamic performance than either the dodge or gm pickups. It is rounder, friendlier and looks much more like a car than the dodge or gm. That may be part of the reason it outsells all other pickup trucks by a considerable margin. The current chevrolet and gmc trucks are still pretty new (they were redesigned for the 1999 model year), but their conservative styling doesn't look as modern as the ford's. The dodge ram looks long in the tooth, by comparison. The f-150's aerodynamic hood falls away very rapidly from the base of the windshield so it's easier to see what's immediately in front of the truck; that's handy for maneuvering off road, for parking, and when maneuvering in tight city traffic. interiorin some ways, the ford f-150 interior is superior in flavor to the gm and dodge trucks. The f-150 takes its interior design cues from the company's successful passenger cars, such as the ford taurus and lincoln continental. The designers adapted these cues to the pickup's large cab. The curves, surfaces, textures, instrumentation and graphics inside the ford f-150 are more adventurous, more modern, and better executed than the competition, big and bold but not outsized for a big vehicle. the f-150 xlt has dual air bags with a passenger-side deactivation switch. They offer a lot of interior space for the money. The xlt's cloth seats have a recline feature and a lumbar support on the driver's side for even more driving comfort. all pickups share another trait: a relatively high ride height, even on 2x4 models. Getting into and out of the rear seats was easy. The rear seats are comfortable and offer good legroom, allowing passengers to slide their feet under the front seats. Rear-seat comfort is such that and adult should be able to ride back there for longer trips. supercrew's rear seats fold down (and are split 60/40), offering a nearly flat cargo space. It's a great place to put cargo or for big dogs. Small storage compartments behind the front seats add utility. driving impressiontwo-wheel-drive f-150s use conventional steel leaf springs at the rear and a coil spring independent front suspension. We find the brakes on ford trucks to be average in stopping power and average in fade characteristics. although the optional 4. 6-liter v8 engine is rated at 220 horsepower and 290 foot-pounds of torque, we don't think it's as good a performer in many respects as the small v8 engines from gm and dodge. It's a good, solid engine, with millions of examples on the road, and it sounds good at full throttle, but we find it a little duff for all-around street use, and we would certainly find it wanting if we had to haul anything heavy or tow a trailer up a mountain road. The trendiest of the trucks. introductionford's f-series pickups are proof that barnyard workhorse trucks will never be their squared-off selves again. Aerodynamic outside, luxurious inside, overhead-cam performance under the hood, and safety and convenience features that only a few years ago weren't available on cars, let alone trucks, the ford f-series pickups are as modern as trucks get. for 1999, the f-series trucks sport a revised front-end appearance with big new grilles, valance panels and chrome bumpers. Wheelbase lengths of 119. 9 in., 138. 5 in. And this year, ford has increased the power of its 5. 4-liter v8 significantly to 260 horsepower and 345 foot-pounds of torque. But, by and large, there ought to be something here for just about anybody. The xlt trim includes several items that might otherwise be options. The total for this high-line truck came to $31,450. In smoothness, it embarrasses every other full-size truck engine on the market. The power delivery is crisp and responsive, and to good low-end power it adds excellent mid-range and higher-speed power to make short work of real-world demands such as quick acceleration to freeway speeds. Peak horsepower has been increased by 25 to 260 horsepower. Torque is up by 15 foot-pounds to 345. the f-series front suspension uses upper and lower control arms. It replaced the ancient twin i-beam, and we're thankful. With this suspension, the ride is far better, handling is superior, steering feel is drastically improved and directional stability, such as when traveling at highway speeds in a severe crosswind, is immensely enhanced. We would expect that tire wear would also be better, as this was one of the many weak points of the twin i-beam. With the 40/60 split-bench front seat, driver and passenger have individually reclining backrests. What can serve as the center backrest is also a folding armrest; when folded forward, it provides a large cupholder and capacious bin. Inside this storage bin are places for coins, cassette tapes and so forth, and a divider which, when removed, allows space for an 8 1/2 x 11-inch tablet. There are a pair of cupholders in the instrument panel, and a goodly number of the expected storage compartments and map pockets here and there. the view outward is superb, as the f-series styling includes a low beltline and big windows all around. Even fairly short drivers should have decent forward visibility. The only vision-related gripe we had was a vertically narrow inside rear-view mirror, which cut down on the view to the rear. all supercabs include a third door on the passenger's side for entry to the back seat. This door is operable once the passenger's door is open, and can be opened from inside or out. Two adults should be reasonably comfortable on longer trips in the back seat. With the rear seat folded forward there's a flat, sturdy steel surface, great for carrying toolboxes or large amounts of luggage. driving impressionpeople familiar with trucks, particularly those familiar with ford trucks, will find the driving experience in the new f-series greatly enhanced. A high degree of directional stability adds to safety and comfort because it keeps the vehicle headed down its intended path. ride, too, is remarkably good. One big problem with pickup trucks has always been how poorly they tend to ride when empty; this can become really annoying on long trips down concrete interstates where trucks can bounce ceaselessly. There's no truck-like roar or rumble, no feeling that it starts thrashing at higher speeds. Whether driving around the city or taking an extended highway cruise, the 5. 4-liter triton engine is the most velvety full-size pickup truck engine we've encountered. The smaller, 4. 6-liter version is equally smooth, but it's less powerful, and we highly recommend the stronger 5. 4-liter v8. But the ford is certainly the sleekest of the bunch. there's a lot to like about it in addition to the look. The interior is extraordinary, the triton v8s are silky and strong, the ride and drive is exceptional and it's full to the brim with worthwhile features. A new diesel engine and a new f-450 pickup are designed to handle the needs of ever-increasing agricultural, boat, and rv trailer weights. Other revisions and refinements are designed to address customer comment and stricter emissions standards. two words can define the 2008 super duty relative to the previous iteration: refined and more. With realistic expectations, any faults will seem minute when compared to the ability to plow a big parking lot, carry a small car or tow a small house. the 2008 super duty is not an all-new truck. Some body panels, engines and transmissions continue. But many aspects more substantial than the front-end styling have changed. It has a new interior in five different flavors from hose-out to leather lux, a new diesel engine, more added features, and should cost less based on equipment than the outgoing model. and in a first for any major pickup manufacturer ford has added a medium-duty pickup, the f-450, to the line. The super duty line can haul from one ton to three. It can tow from three tons to more than twelve. It can carry three to six real-world people with room to spare. And the door pockets, glovebox, and console will hold more stuff than some sports cars' trunks. Almost every permutation is built. Exceptions: the king ranch version is offered only on crew cabs, the f-450 is long-bed crew cab only, and the fx4 trim is not offered on 2wd, any f-450, or with a regular cab. a 5. 4-liter v8 with 300 horsepower and 365 pound-feet of torque is standard on all models up to the f-350 crew cab drw, which has the 362-hp, 457 lb-ft 6. 8-liter v10 standard. Both the v10 and 6. 4-liter diesel (350 hp, 650 lb-ft) are optional across the f-250/f-350 spectrum, but the diesel is the only engine offered on f-450. A six-speed manual is standard, a five-speed automatic available. the base xl is commercial in nature, with vinyl seats and flooring, black painted grille and bumpers, plain trim, am/fm stereo, and a weight-appropriate receiver hitch. Options include mechanical upgrades (engine, limited-slip differential, larger tires, traction control, camper package, off-road package for 4wd, tow command, etc.), air conditioning, auxiliary switches, reverse sensors, and a tailgate step. xlt trim adds chrome trim and wheels, 40/20/40 cloth front seat, carpet, ac, cd player, power windows/locks/mirrors, tilt wheel and cruise control. Options include aluminum wheels, captain's chairs w/power and heat, audiophile sound system, adjustable pedals, sport trim package, moonroof, and rear-seat dvd entertainment. the fx4 off-road model adds 18-inch wheels and lt275/70r18 all-terrain tires, standard limited-slip, skid plates, fog lamps, security system, overhead console, and leather-wrapped steering wheel. Options include 20-inch wheels, navigation/audiophile system, sirius radio, and power telescope/fold heated dual-element towing mirrors. lariat trim (n/a on regular cabs) adds polished wheels, leather power seats, dual-zone climate control, trip computer, redundant sound/climate controls on wheel, woodgrain trim, illuminated visor mirrors, privacy glass and a sliding rear window. Dimensions are easily given in yards rather than inches. The color of the side vent gives away if it is gasoline or diesel-powered. given its fender flares and dark snout, the fx4 is the most aggressive trim style, though no super duty would be mistaken for anything less than a full-size pickup even with nothing scalable within sight. New towing mirrors include signal repeaters that won't distract the driver; they telescope and fold (manual or powered), and include two large reflective elements for safe rear vision with the widest street-legal trailers. an optional tailgate step pops a 16. 7 x 4. 5-inch step with a half-ton load rating out of the tailgate and raises a grab handle rated at 300 pounds to make the climb safer. It also includes an assist so the very heavy tailgate feels less heavy. The handle makes bed access easier but may need to be lowered again to slide a load in, and removing the gate, as is often the case with some trailers, may become a two-person chore. interiorwith three-and-a-half feet of headroom and just shy of six feet of shoulder room, the ford super duty cab is massive. Materials are job appropriate: no carpet mats for commercial or trail duty, and appear well assembled. The king ranch version brings a little lincoln to a pickup while the base model could be cleaned out with a bucket of warm water. On upper-end models, the gear-cog-like chrome surrounds for vents and gauges can create some unwelcome reflections, and the number of textures and colors (we counted up to eight) may be too much for design minimalists. the interior has been restyled for 2008. The dash is now segmented in three smaller parts for a more manageable look. The center stack houses a pair of large vents, radio and navigation top center where easily viewed, climate control, and most switchgear. Side steps are available. We noted a marked reduction in wind/cab noise around the center pillar in the supercab, and the better sealing means that big front door requires a solid yank to close with all windows up. The short shifter for the automatic is less effort but more precise than before. The headlights can be turned off for good neighborly night-time entries to campgrounds or drive-ins. the ventilation system is capable of cooling or heating the cavernous volume and keeping forward windows and mirrors clear, and seat heaters are very effective; a supplemental cab heater is available for diesel models. the navigation system is fairly intuitive and will be familiar to ford family drivers. ford's tow command integrated trailer brake system is easy to set up and provides better, smoother trailer braking control than any aftermarket controller.
