2013 ford escape review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. All-new, featuring fuel-efficient ecoboost engines. introductionthe 2013 ford escape is a total redesign that moves the top-selling compact suv into the times, with high-tech small engines, a smooth 6-speed transmission, aerodynamic front styling, and electronic wizardry. Ford claims 11 features exclusive to the escape in the compact suv class, everything from a capless fuel nozzle to torque vectoring control, which helps the escape corner more securely.  gas prices have fueled the compact suv market (in europe it's quadrupled in the last decade), so this is a class that's important to ford's ongoing rebound, and they've pulled out all the stops to make the escape good.  fuel mileage varies from an epa-estimated 23 city/33 highway mpg with the 1. 6-liter front-wheel drive escape to 21/28 mpg with the 2. 0-liter all-wheel drive. We drove both versions and fell below those marks, however, averaging 22. 7 mpg in the 1. 6-liter and 19. 7 mpg in the 2. 0-liter, while driving them spiritedly. That's still better than a comparably equipped honda cr-v or toyota rav4, and good enough that the escape hybrid has been abandoned.  the 2013 escape lineup features three engines, including the returning tried-and-true 2. 5-liter, less powerful and efficient but with a lower msrp than the new ecoboost engines. There's a 1. 6-liter making 178 horsepower and 2. 0-liter making 240 hp, both twin-turbos with direct injection and twin independent variable camshaft timing (ti-vct), although having different designs.  this review is a tale of two escapes, because we found the 1. 6-liter fwd to feel completely different from the 2. 0-liter awd. The 1. 6 is quick, lively and visceral, a blast to drive. The 2. 0-liter awd feels more grownup, civilized, solid, heavy. The chassis is 40 percent stiffer, and the ride is smooth. The interior materials are soft, and the plastic high quality. Rear legroom is decent, at 36. 8 inches, and rear climate control is standard in all but the base s model. There's excellent cargo space, 68. 1 cubic feet behind the first row and 34. 3 cubic feet behind the second row, and the standard 60/40 rear seat folds flat wonderfully fast, with one lever.  the nose of the new 2013 escape is distinctive, sort of aero stubby, with the blue oval emblem in its wide narrow grille to say it's a ford. Although the escape emulates its big brother the explorer suv, its new nose more resembles its little brother the focus hatchback. The hood has nice character lines, and the headlights sweep sharply back and up into muscular wheelwells.  one clever innovation that others are already copying is an available magic release for the liftgate. The new version, as they say, is simpler and the screen is cleaner. And to be sure, we have, at times, gotten it to work for us. Last but not least, the price for the escape has actually come down. It adds ambient lighting, remote start, premium leather, hid headlamps, power liftgate, silver roofrails, backup sensor, upgraded sony sound system with hd radio, and 19-inch painted alloy wheels.  standard safety equipment includes advancetrac traction and stability control with roll stability control, curve control, torque vectoring control, two-stage frontal airbags, driver knee airbag, side airbags, abs with brake assist, tire pressure monitor. walkaroundthere's no mistaking that the 2013 escape is a new car, and it's got the blue oval in its wide narrow grille to say it's a ford. Its nose is more like little sister focus, rather than big brother explorer. Aero and almost stubby, looking like it's meant for the business of efficient hauling. Character lines on the hood suggesting a cowl. The headlights are sharply angled under sheetmetal speed lines like eyebrows, and sweep back and up into the muscular wheelwells.  the bottom two-thirds of the face is a gaping black mouth in split fascia. It conceals a ford innovation, sensor-controlled shutters behind the grille that regulate air into the engine for optimum efficiency and maximum fuel mileage.  the rear end doesn't keep up with the new slick front. It looks big and bulky for the size of the car, with lines going in three directions; it's as if the sheetmetal were shaped to match the taillights, including the indent for the license plate, like an upside-down triangle with the point at bottom chopped off. The standard dual exhaust is cool with the pipes back there, but the cladding in gray looks like a big silver lump hanging out the back.  but there's something hiding under that cladding that's great. It's a first we like, and would buy.  we also like that overall on the three models, there's lots of black eggcrate and not so much chrome. Don't like so much the gray or black plastic cladding that surrounds every model. The 19-inch alloy wheels try way too hard to look out there, while the steel 17s on the base se are the least ugly. interiorthe rugged fabric seats are the best! And since the available myfordtouch remains problematic (we'll get to that), those excellent seats open the door to happy purchase of the s model. Gauges are clean and attractive with pretty blue needles. Unlike the expensive jaguar, ford's rich former sibling, there are actual fuel and temperature gauges. There's a small rectangular window for information, scrolled through using arrows and a dial on the steering wheel, like all fords, and like jaguar, the shared switchgear remains.  the turn signal sound is a classy jaguar-like dink dink dink. Great job, there.  a small shift lever is dropped down out of the way. There's a selectshift button on the side of the lever, controlling manual operation of the automatic transmission. The new mach 1 and the cobra deliver brilliant acceleration performance with lots of torque for quickly attaining super-legal speeds. Don't expect sophisticated ride and handling, though. This is a hammer of a car, and it's interior is dated.  mustang's heritage dates back to april 17, 1964, when the first one rolled onto the streets with its long hood, short rear deck, low profile. About 135,000 mustangs were sold in 2002. Ford claims mustang is the best-selling convertible in america (54,783 in 2001). With the chevy camaro and pontiac firebird gone, the ford mustang is the last pony standing. A new mustang is on the horizon, likely to be introduced as a 2005 model.  for 2003, two new special-edition models are available: mach 1 models boast a powerful twin-cam v8, sports suspension, and shaker hood designed to remind us of the famous 1969 fastback. Several new measures are designed to reduce wind noise, the suspension has been retuned, and the v6 and v8 engines get some minor refinements.  . lineupmustang comes in coupe and convertible body styles. Base models come with a v6 engine. High-performance gt models are powered by a v8. Ultra high-performance cobra svt models get a supercharged v8.  base msrps: v6 coupe 17,615); v6 convertible 23,315); gt 23,485); gt convertible 27,790); cobra coupe 33,300); cobra convertible 37,545).  standard equipment on all mustangs includes air conditioning, power windows and door locks, tilt-steering column, a floor console, remote keyless entry system and interval windshield wipers. Reclining cloth front bucket seats are standard, as are 50/50 split-folding rear seatbacks on coupe models. A six-way power driver's seat is available, as are leather-trimmed bucket seats.  the standard mustang engine is a 3. 8-liter v6, an overhead-valve engine rated 190 horsepower at 5250 rpm and 220 foot-pounds of torque at 2750 rpm. V6 coupes offer a choice of two optional trim packages: deluxe 730) includes rear spoiler, color-keyed floor mats, power driver's seat and cruise control. Premium 1845) adds a leather-wrapped steering wheel, mach audio am/fm with in-dash 6-cd changer, anti-lock brakes (abs) and traction control; a stripe distinguishes premium models.  pony 595) adds the gt hood and scoop, 16-inch polished aluminum wheels, mustang stampede graphics and unique stripes, a special rear bumper with blackened mustang graphics, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel.  gt comes with a 4. 6-liter v8 with single overhead cams and two-valve heads rated at 260 hp at 5250 rpm and 302 lbs.-ft. Of torque at 4000 rpm. To manage all that power, the gt is equipped with gas-pressure shocks with unique model calibrations, p245/45r17 performance tires on 17-inch alloy painted wheels, a traction loc rear axle, abs and traction control. Gts come with sport bucket seats and fog lamps. Distinguished by its black shaker hood, the mach 1 4885) is a package that includes special 17-inch wheels, special leather-trimmed seats, special interior trim, in-dash six-disc cd stereo, and special exterior graphics.  gt and convertible models offer a premium package 2585) with leather seating surfaces, the mach 460 stereo with in-dash 6-cd changer, and abs and traction control. Convertible models with premium trim come standard with an automatic transmission.  cobra models are massaged by ford's special vehicle team, or svt. The svt v8 produces 390 horsepower at 6000 rpm, with 390 pounds-feet of torque at 3500 rpm. It comes mated to a six-speed manual gearbox. Cobra comes shod with p275/40r17 tires and loaded with special interior and exterior trim.  convertibles feature a power top with a scratch-resistant glass rear window. A black semi-hard boot protects the top and provides a slick top-down appearance.  new safety features for 2003 include a new a-pillar, headliners, sun visors and a revised d-ring seat belt attachment, all designed to offer better head protection in the event of an impact. The firing strategy on both driver and passenger side air bags has been updated. Standard safety equipment includes safety belts with pretensioners to tighten the lap belt and shoulder belts in the first moments of a crash. The rear fender air intake, for example, has sharp corners and pronounced lines; but the rocker panels curve out, and the fenders have pronounced front and rear wheel well arches. The front end features wraparound complex reflector headlamps with integrated side marker lamps, combined with a square-edged honeycomb grille and a chrome pony. Tricolor front fender badges recall the good old days, as does the prominent but non-functional hood scoop. In back, it's 1965 with vertical, three-element taillamps.  gt models get unique hood and side-scoop treatments, along with fog lights and a rear spoiler.  mach 1 is easy to spot with special trim that starts with its shaker hood scoop. Attached directly to the top of the engine, the black scoop rears its head through a squarish hole in the mach 1 hood. (hood scoops on gt models sit on top of the hood.) a bold low-gloss black stripe runs up the center of the powerdome hood to accentuate the scoop. In theory, the scoop is designed to channel fresh air into the intake for increased breathing and, therefore, increased power.  cobra is distinguished from the other models by a unique front and rear appearance package. Its raised hood is required to make room for the supercharger setup. Two rear-facing vents near the leading edge of the hood are designed to let hot air out of the engine bay. Cobra is further distinguished by its unique grille opening, front bumper, driving lamps, rocker panels and side scoops, rear-end treatment, and 17-inch five-spoke alloy wheels in either brushed or chromed finish.  . interiorthe mustang has good, reclining bucket seats with plenty of travel. Seatbelts are attached to the seat frames so they move with the seats.  the interior is cozy, with enough seat-track length to accommodate tall drivers and just enough elbowroom to keep from feeling cramped. Convertibles and coupes offer about the same space in the front seats.  the back seat is small, with only enough room for small objects or kids. Convertibles offer less hip and shoulder room than coupes, but about the same headroom and legroom.  the trunk is small with an even smaller opening. Coupes hold just under 11 cubic feet worth of cargo, while convertibles hold just 7. 7 cubic feet. A split fold-down rear seat is standard on all models and handy for hauling cargo. A glow-in-the-dark safety latch has been added inside the trunks of all mustang models designed to prevent kids getting locked in the trunks.  the federal government gives the mustang a five-star rating for front passenger safety, its highest. Only the two frontal air bags are available, however, there are no side air bags.  leather upholstery is standard in the premium gt, optional in some other models. Running horses embossed on the upper portions of the seat backrests recall the deluxe pony interior of the mid-1960s.  the mach 1 tachometer and speedometer use a tall condensed typeface and more hash marks that make it harder to read than the gauges in the gt models. The instrument panel, center console and headliner are color-keyed. To turn on the headlights, pull out an old-fashioned knob on the left. The center console includes cup holders.  svt cobra models offer front bucket seats with nudo leather trim and suede inserts. The driver's seat features six-way power with power-adjustable thigh and side bolsters, and power lumbar support. Clearly, these seats are made for serious, fast driving. Switches are on the right-front corner of the seat. The svt instrument cluster has been redesigned to include a boost gauge. The gauges feature titanium-colored faces and electroluminescent lighting. The cobra's gearshift knob is leather-wrapped, with a brushed-aluminum insert on the top, inscribed with the six-speed pattern. Metal-trimmed pedals and dead pedal are standard.  . driving impressiona 300-mile drive in a gt convertible was a reminder that the mustang is a throwback to another era, but still a very enjoyable car. New supercrew is best light-duty crew cab available. introductionthe f-150 is available in every imaginable pickup truck configuration. It can act like a serious work truck, an off-road toy, or a luxurious everyday vehicle that doubles as a highly capable weekend tool. There's even a hot rod.  it comes in a myriad of bed lengths, two different body styles, and now three distinct cab configurations. Crew cabs have become the big fad in compact and mid-size trucks the past couple of years, but with the exception of the tried-and-true super-long heavy-duty models, this new full-size ford crew cab is by far the most comfortable of the new trucks. Overall length is kept short by using an ultra-short bed that measures just 5 1/2 feet; though the bed is a compromise, it relieves the driver of the daily burden of maneuvering a pickup that's as long as an aircraft carrier. The supercrew is equipped like a luxury sport-utility, with power-adjustable pedals and optional moonroof, rear-seat entertainment system, and a handsome leather interior.  as for the rest of the 2001 f-150 line, power-adjustable pedals are standard on all lariat models and optional on xl and xlt trim lines. Antilock brakes (abs) are standard throughout the f-150 line, and remote keyless entry is now a standard feature on xlt models. lineupthree engines are available: the standard engine is a 4. 2-liter v6 engine that generates 202 horsepower. The optional 4. 6-liter v8 produces 220 horsepower. The 5. 4-liter v8 produces 260 horsepower. And there are three trim levels: xl, xlt, and lariat. With colors and options thrown in, the model matrix is huge. walkaroundthe f-150 is a stylish truck, with much more attention paid to aerodynamic performance than either the dodge or gm pickups. It is rounder, friendlier and looks much more like a car than the dodge or gm. That may be part of the reason it outsells all other pickup trucks by a considerable margin. The current chevrolet and gmc trucks are still pretty new (they were redesigned for the 1999 model year), but their conservative styling doesn't look as modern as the ford's. The dodge ram looks long in the tooth, by comparison. The f-150's aerodynamic hood falls away very rapidly from the base of the windshield so it's easier to see what's immediately in front of the truck; that's handy for maneuvering off road, for parking, and when maneuvering in tight city traffic. interiorin some ways, the ford f-150 interior is superior in flavor to the gm and dodge trucks. The f-150 takes its interior design cues from the company's successful passenger cars, such as the ford taurus and lincoln continental. The designers adapted these cues to the pickup's large cab. The curves, surfaces, textures, instrumentation and graphics inside the ford f-150 are more adventurous, more modern, and better executed than the competition, big and bold but not outsized for a big vehicle.  the f-150 xlt has dual air bags with a passenger-side deactivation switch. They offer a lot of interior space for the money. The xlt's cloth seats have a recline feature and a lumbar support on the driver's side for even more driving comfort.  all pickups share another trait: a relatively high ride height, even on 2x4 models. Getting into and out of the rear seats was easy. The rear seats are comfortable and offer good legroom, allowing passengers to slide their feet under the front seats. Rear-seat comfort is such that and adult should be able to ride back there for longer trips.  supercrew's rear seats fold down (and are split 60/40), offering a nearly flat cargo space. It's a great place to put cargo or for big dogs. Small storage compartments behind the front seats add utility. driving impressiontwo-wheel-drive f-150s use conventional steel leaf springs at the rear and a coil spring independent front suspension. We find the brakes on ford trucks to be average in stopping power and average in fade characteristics.  although the optional 4. 6-liter v8 engine is rated at 220 horsepower and 290 foot-pounds of torque, we don't think it's as good a performer in many respects as the small v8 engines from gm and dodge. It's a good, solid engine, with millions of examples on the road, and it sounds good at full throttle, but we find it a little duff for all-around street use, and we would certainly find it wanting if we had to haul anything heavy or tow a trailer up a mountain road. For any customer contemplating those kinds of duties, the 5. 4-liter v8 engine is a much better choice. summaryford's f-150 is still among the most car-like of the full-size pickup trucks, with slick looks, pleasing performance, a comfortable cabin, and a proven powertrain.  ford's new f-150 supercrew is the most comfortable of the light-duty crew cabs currently available. model lineup4x2 styleside 120-in.
