2013 ford escape review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. All-new, featuring fuel-efficient ecoboost engines. introductionthe 2013 ford escape is a total redesign that moves the top-selling compact suv into the times, with high-tech small engines, a smooth 6-speed transmission, aerodynamic front styling, and electronic wizardry. Ford claims 11 features exclusive to the escape in the compact suv class, everything from a capless fuel nozzle to torque vectoring control, which helps the escape corner more securely.  gas prices have fueled the compact suv market (in europe it's quadrupled in the last decade), so this is a class that's important to ford's ongoing rebound, and they've pulled out all the stops to make the escape good.  fuel mileage varies from an epa-estimated 23 city/33 highway mpg with the 1. 6-liter front-wheel drive escape to 21/28 mpg with the 2. 0-liter all-wheel drive. We drove both versions and fell below those marks, however, averaging 22. 7 mpg in the 1. 6-liter and 19. 7 mpg in the 2. 0-liter, while driving them spiritedly. That's still better than a comparably equipped honda cr-v or toyota rav4, and good enough that the escape hybrid has been abandoned.  the 2013 escape lineup features three engines, including the returning tried-and-true 2. 5-liter, less powerful and efficient but with a lower msrp than the new ecoboost engines. There's a 1. 6-liter making 178 horsepower and 2. 0-liter making 240 hp, both twin-turbos with direct injection and twin independent variable camshaft timing (ti-vct), although having different designs.  this review is a tale of two escapes, because we found the 1. 6-liter fwd to feel completely different from the 2. 0-liter awd. The 1. 6 is quick, lively and visceral, a blast to drive. The 2. 0-liter awd feels more grownup, civilized, solid, heavy. The chassis is 40 percent stiffer, and the ride is smooth. The interior materials are soft, and the plastic high quality. Rear legroom is decent, at 36. 8 inches, and rear climate control is standard in all but the base s model. There's excellent cargo space, 68. 1 cubic feet behind the first row and 34. 3 cubic feet behind the second row, and the standard 60/40 rear seat folds flat wonderfully fast, with one lever.  the nose of the new 2013 escape is distinctive, sort of aero stubby, with the blue oval emblem in its wide narrow grille to say it's a ford. Although the escape emulates its big brother the explorer suv, its new nose more resembles its little brother the focus hatchback. The hood has nice character lines, and the headlights sweep sharply back and up into muscular wheelwells.  one clever innovation that others are already copying is an available magic release for the liftgate. The new version, as they say, is simpler and the screen is cleaner. And to be sure, we have, at times, gotten it to work for us. Last but not least, the price for the escape has actually come down. It adds ambient lighting, remote start, premium leather, hid headlamps, power liftgate, silver roofrails, backup sensor, upgraded sony sound system with hd radio, and 19-inch painted alloy wheels.  standard safety equipment includes advancetrac traction and stability control with roll stability control, curve control, torque vectoring control, two-stage frontal airbags, driver knee airbag, side airbags, abs with brake assist, tire pressure monitor. walkaroundthere's no mistaking that the 2013 escape is a new car, and it's got the blue oval in its wide narrow grille to say it's a ford. Its nose is more like little sister focus, rather than big brother explorer. Aero and almost stubby, looking like it's meant for the business of efficient hauling. Character lines on the hood suggesting a cowl. The headlights are sharply angled under sheetmetal speed lines like eyebrows, and sweep back and up into the muscular wheelwells.  the bottom two-thirds of the face is a gaping black mouth in split fascia. It conceals a ford innovation, sensor-controlled shutters behind the grille that regulate air into the engine for optimum efficiency and maximum fuel mileage.  the rear end doesn't keep up with the new slick front. It looks big and bulky for the size of the car, with lines going in three directions; it's as if the sheetmetal were shaped to match the taillights, including the indent for the license plate, like an upside-down triangle with the point at bottom chopped off. The standard dual exhaust is cool with the pipes back there, but the cladding in gray looks like a big silver lump hanging out the back.  but there's something hiding under that cladding that's great. It's a first we like, and would buy.  we also like that overall on the three models, there's lots of black eggcrate and not so much chrome. Don't like so much the gray or black plastic cladding that surrounds every model. The 19-inch alloy wheels try way too hard to look out there, while the steel 17s on the base se are the least ugly. interiorthe rugged fabric seats are the best! And since the available myfordtouch remains problematic (we'll get to that), those excellent seats open the door to happy purchase of the s model. Gauges are clean and attractive with pretty blue needles. Unlike the expensive jaguar, ford's rich former sibling, there are actual fuel and temperature gauges. There's a small rectangular window for information, scrolled through using arrows and a dial on the steering wheel, like all fords, and like jaguar, the shared switchgear remains.  the turn signal sound is a classy jaguar-like dink dink dink. Great job, there.  a small shift lever is dropped down out of the way. There's a selectshift button on the side of the lever, controlling manual operation of the automatic transmission. We've complained about this same button on the mustang Climate Control✔ Cruise Control✔ Remote Start✔ Alloy Wheels

2013 ford explorer review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Roomy suv with contemporary technology. introductionthe ford explorer is one the best seven-passenger sport-utility vehicles available. It delivers the function and family friendly features of a minivan with the rugged appeal of an suv.  new for 2013 is an explorer sport trim with a twin-turbocharged version of ford's 3. 5-liter v6 engine, a sport-tuned suspension and all-wheel-drive. Using premium gas, explorer sport makes up to 365 horsepower and 350 pound-feet of torque.  new options on 2013 explorer limited models include a lane departure warning system, heated steering wheel and a power tilt-and-telescoping steering column. All 2013 explorer models come standard with a front-passenger knee airbag.  this latest generation of the ford explorer, introduced for 2011, features a one-piece, unibody design rather than a ladder-type truck frame with a separate, bolted on body. The result is more car-like driving dynamics, as well as significant weight savings, which translates to better fuel economy.  powering all 2013 ford explorer models except the sport is 3. 5-liter v6 that makes 290 horsepower and 255 pound-feet of torque, paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission. It also includes hill start assist and hill descent control.  fuel economy with the base v6 engine on front-wheel-drive explorer models is an epa-estimated 17/24 mpg city/highway, or 17/23 mpg city/highway on 4wd models.  even with regular all-season tires, the explorer will blast through sand or traverse deep ditches and steep hills, no problem. It has more power than the standard v6 in the previous-generation explorer, with 240 horsepower and 270 pound-feet of torque, and delivers an epa-estimated 20/28 mpg city/highway.  the 2. 0 ecoboost is sufficiently powerful, and acceptable if mileage is the absolute priority. We prefer the standard 290-horspower v6 with its smooth, strong acceleration.  explorer's chassis is super rigid, which not only makes for great crash-test scores, but also a quiet cabin, excellent ride quality and solid handling that belies the explorer's considerable size.  inside, there is plenty of legroom in the second row, real space for passengers in the third, and up to 80. 7 cubic-feet of cargo space. It can be reconfigured in seconds, with split rear seats that fold with a button on each side and bounce back up with the pull of a lever. The interior is smartly styled and well finished. The materials and build quality are quite good.  the base explorer comes well equipped. The upgraded limited trim is leather-upholstered, with heated-seats and offered with premium audio, navigation and rear-seat dvd entertainment. The myfordtouch interface is optional, but can be cumbersome and at least a little annoying.  other suvs to consider in this class include the buick enclave, chevrolet traverse, dodge durango, gmc acadia, honda pilot or mazda cx-9. Fuel economy is an epa-estimated17/24 mpg city/highway and 17/23 mpg city/highway on 4wd models. Of torque with an epa-estimated 20/28 mpg city/highway.  explorer 29,100) comes standard with fabric upholstery, air conditioning, a six-way power driver seat with manual recline, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel with audio controls, power windows, locks and outside mirrors, a trip computer, 60/40 split-folding second-row seats, 50/50 split third-row seats, a six-speaker audio system with single cd player and auxiliary audio jack, rear privacy glass, roof rails and 17-inch steel wheels with wheel covers. Options include a tow package 570) and a sync with myford pakage 295), which adds voice activation, bluetooth and siriussx satellite radio capability with a six-month subscription.  explorer xlt 32,680) adds a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, ford's sync voice activation with satellite radio capability, a usb audio port, a keyless entry touchpad on the driver's door, automatic headlamps, rear parking sensors and 18-inch alloy wheels.  explorer limited 38,100) gets leather upholstery, heated front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, a 12-speaker sony audio system with hd radio, power adjustable pedals with memory, a cargo net, a rearview camera, remote start, a 110-volt outlet, 20-inch painted aluminum wheels, and the myfordtouch touchscreen interface. Of torque (using premium fuel). Epa fuel economy estimates are 16/22 mpg city/highway. Standard features include sport front seats with fabric upholstery, unique interior and exterior trim, and many of the standard features found on the limited model.  safety features include ford's curve control, which monitors vehicle speed going into a corner and applies braking to individual wheels as needed, as well as mykey, which allows owners to set limits for vehicle speed and stereo volume. Other standard safety features include front side airbags, side curtain airbags, a front passenger knee airbag, stability control, traction control and trailer sway control.  optional safety features include a blind spot warning system with cross-traffic alert on explorer xlt models and above. Limited and sport models also get an available lane-departure warning and keeping system, as well as forward collision warning. walkaroundthe ford explorer is rugged but refined, familiar but fresh. It's a foot longer than the ford edge crossover, a few inches shorter than the dodge durango suv and about eight inches shorter than the chevy traverse. The amber indicators sweep back like narrow wings atop tidy main projector beams. The plastic grille is gray on the base explorer, body-colored on the xlt and satin-chrome on the limited. The hood looks short from the side, but long when looking straight down it. It's got two parallel humps and a scoop in the center. Rear taillights are led, and also look good.  the window outline is clean, bold and symmetrical, with blackened a-, b-, and d-pillars, and body-colored c-pillars that slant down and back and impart forward motion to the vehicle. The fender flares are inspired by the mustang and body sides follow the lines of the taurus. The three-bar grille strikes resemble those of the range rover, which was once-upon-a-time a member of the ford family.  wheels are 17-inch steel with plastic covers on the base explorer, 10-spoke 18-inch painted aluminum on the xlt, and 20-inch painted aluminum with spokes like flower petals on the limited. The optional 20-inch polished aluminum wheels have spokes like shriveling flower petals or crab pincers, and don't do justice to the car. interiorfit and finish inside the explorer is excellent, and we particularly like the limited's leather seats.  the front seats sit up high, which is good because the hood looks long from the driver's seat. The slanted center stack has a clean design and uses stylish satin-finish trim materials. The doors have metal speaker grilles, and curve into the dash panel. There's a big glovebox with a shelf, leather grab handles and armrests on explorers with leather interior, and long door pockets with space for a bottle.  one reason we like the base model is its conventional gauges, relatively simple 4. 2-inch lcd screen at the top of the center stack, and familiar mechanical knobs below. The base explorer doesn't come with the myfordtouch driver connect technology, and neither does the xlt, unless it's chosen as an option.  cars equipped with myfordtouch have two driver-configurable lcd screens in front of the driver on either side a big speedometer, and an 8-inch color touch screen at the top of the center stack. 2003 ford taurus review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Refinements improve a solid sedan. introductionthe ford taurus is more than practical family transportation. It is a genuinely exciting mid-size sedan. New seals for the doors, windows and rearview mirrors along with new sound damping in the floor make for a quieter cabin. Illuminated cruise control switches have been added and the controls for the adjustable pedals have been moved to the instrument panel for easier access. New seven-spoke wheels add a fresh look to the 2003 models.  for 2003, more features come standard, including power windows and door locks, a tilt steering column and floor mats. Optional trim packages include a new sport package for the ses sedan. The wagon is available in se 21,345) and sel 23,170) versions. A choice of two 3. 0-liter v6 engines is available. This 3. 0-liter 12-valve v6 uses a traditional overhead-valve design. The vulcan v6 is rated at 155 horsepower and 185 pounds-feet of torque. Although not particularly quick from a standstill, once rolling it delivers more than adequate performance, along with a nicely rorty exhaust note. A flexible fuel version of the vulcan engine can run on e-85 ethanol, regular unleaded gasoline or any combination of the two in the same 18-gallon fuel tank.  ses is a popular choice and comes in standard and deluxe variations. Ses adds an in-dash single cd player, front bucket seats with six-way power and a manual lumbar adjustment on the driver's side. Also standard is ford's duratec v6, a more sophisticated engine with double overhead cams working 24 valves. This engine also displaces 3. 0 liters, but revs higher and produces 200 hp and 200 lbs.-ft. It comes with five-spoke aluminum sport wheels, a rear spoiler, special fender badging, pewter brushed interior trim, two-tone black and gray sport seats and special floor mats.  sel, available in deluxe and premium editions, adds seven-spoke machined aluminum wheels, a six-cd changer, leather-wrapped steering wheel, dark paledo wood-trimmed interior, automatic electronic temperature control, adjustable pedals and keyless keypad entry.  wagons are better equipped than their sedan counterparts. The sel wagon adds seven-spoke machined aluminum wheels, a six-cd changer, keypad entry and automatic climate controls.  key options for many models include a mach audio system 345), anti-lock brakes 600), cellport communications system 350), a power moonroof 895), and adjustable pedals 120).  . walkaroundthe ford taurus is a familiar design that has been with us for a few years now. The grille is broad, aggressive, and unmistakably ford-oval, grinning between the large cat's-eye headlamps. Its flanks undulate handsomely with crisp character lines, and its rear end bears a resemblance to the sexy stern of the jaguar s-type.  the sedan's trunk is of generous size and contains the mini-spare tire. The wagon has a flip-up rear window in its tailgate.  . interiorthe taurus cabin is functional and attractive, with controls that are straightforward and easy to use. The materials, switchgear and interior textures have a high-quality look and feel. For 2003, those controls are mounted in a new dashboard and console unit.  the other big interior change is the quiet, thanks to better noise, vibration and harshness controls that include better damping in the floor and measures that reduce air leakage and cabin noise, including the use of expanding foam in the windshield support pillars and various body cavities and the use of new sealing materials in weld access holes.  lx, se and the non-sport ses sedans seat six, thanks to a seating console between their separate front seats. Ford's well-publicized adjustable pedals make a comfortable driving position possible for even very short-legged drivers. The small-diameter steering wheel has a pleasingly thick grip. The cushions and seatbacks are more firm than soft, and firm is usually best on long drives.  the roomy rear compartment seats three, but is set up well for two as the seat forms two semi-buckets and has a pull-down central armrest containing two cupholders. A ventilation duct at the rear of the center console provides climate control for rear passengers. Dual baby-seat anchors are provided on each side of the rear seat. In the se wagon and ses and sel sedans, the rear seatback is split 60/40 and folds down, providing an enormous pass-through luggage capability for skis and other long items.  with its 60/40 split rear seats folded down, the roomy taurus wagon has space for a maximum of 81. 3 cubic feet of cargo; with six passengers aboard, there's still 38. 8 cu. Behind them.  . driving impressionthe ford taurus is a genuinely satisfying car to drive. Its duratec v6 is as responsive as a finger snap, delivering crisp acceleration from low revs straight through to the glass-smooth full-throttle shift point. This engine not only provides good thrust, it makes an understated but nicely throaty declaration that it means business. Its shifts are positive, authoritative, and at the same time, almost impossible to feel. Powerful front-wheel-drive cars like the taurus sel need traction control to reduce wheel spin and provide better control of the car.  the taurus chassis is a good match for this forceful duratec drivetrain. The fully independent suspension provides a smooth, impact-free ride. Taurus uses gas-pressurized shock absorbers, unusual in a family sedan; when pushed in the corners, it remains stable, nimble and ready for more. Cornered hard, its body roll is moderate, and the nicely tuned variable-ratio power rack-and-pinion steering delivers a steady stream of road information. Braking performance was much smoother than that of a dodge intrepid tested at the same time.  with its excellent chassis and duratec power, the ford taurus comes close to being a sports sedan for the price of a family mid-size sedan.  . summaryfor several years, the taurus has been the bowl of chocolate-chip mint in a sea of plain vanilla. While most sedans in the mid-size class seem designed to blend into the scenery, the taurus stands out like a wildebeest in plaid pajamas.  not only does the taurus look like it came from the future, it drives like it came from europe. Yet it comes with a price tag that's quite reasonable. Two engines are available, and both deliver a vigorous response, though we recommend the newer duratec engine. Taurus rides smoothly enough for family duty

1999 ford windstar review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. The newest version of the windstar gets a second sliding door. What's more it's available as a power-operated door. In actual fact, the new model is slightly shorter and a little wider than previously. Ford designers have shortened the length by giving the minivan a less sleek nose. The top-of-the-line sel model tested has a chrome-plated grille that gives the vehicle a more luxurious look than before. The width of the vehicle has increased because of bigger fender flares. Unfortunately, the track was not increased so the wheels do not fill the wheel well as well as before -- even with the bigger tires fitted on the sel -- and that makes the windstar look a bit over-bodied.  ford has adopted chrysler's design feature where the runners for the sliding doors are neatly hidden along the lower edge of the rear side window instead of being gouged out of the body side panel. It gives the windstar a less utilitarian look. The second sliding door is an option on the windstar lx and standard on the se and sel models. Power operation of both doors is also optional on all but the sel version, where it is standard.  power-operated doors are a neat feature as it is convenient to be able to open the doors by the remote key fob from a distance, especially if it is raining. It's also nice for those who find opening and closing the doors a bit strenuous. The one shortcoming is that they move more slowly than manually operated doors which can be closed in no time at all. It takes a few seconds for the electric motor to close the doors. The doors stop closing automatically if any object, such as a kid's leg, is encountered.  the basic windstar is sold as a cargo van with just two seats and no carpeting in the rear. It costs just $18,955 and comes with a 3. 0-liter v6 engine but does include abs and dual airbags. To get the second sliding door, one has to purchase the lx model, which starts at $24,240. Opt for power sliding doors and quickly the price starts rising towards the level of the $30,995 sel model. (all prices include $580 destination charge.). interiorthe windstar is only available in one length, making it directly comparable to chrysler's extended-wheelbase models (grand caravan, grand voyager, town & country). Windstar's total interior volume with seats removed is all but identical to these models and the latest honda odyssey. Most of the other minivans on the market are smaller.  a substantial, nicely designed dashboard wraps around the driver, positioning the radio and climate controls within easy reach. Two cupholders are attached to a tray that slides out and they accommodate a variety of drinking containers.  a neat overhead console includes storage for sunglasses, coins and a remote garage door opener; a wide-angle mirror helps to keep an eye on the kids. Another unique ford option is a small voice recorder attached to the sun visor that can be used to record notes and ideas that come to mind while driving.  the sel tested had an optional center console on the floor between the two front seats. In many ways this is inconvenient as it makes it difficult for adults to walk back to the rear of the vehicle. The third row is the usual bench seat for three people. It now comes with small rollers that make it easier to remove, though it still weighs about 100 pounds, making it a two-person job. It is fixed to a track so it can be moved up to 7 inches giving more rear luggage space or rear seat leg room depending on one's needs for the day. It can also be fixed in the same attachment points in place of the second row of seats, creating five seats and lots of cargo space.  all seat backs fold down to provide a flat space with tables and more cupholders. Rear climate controls are optional as well as rear stereo controls for separate rear use of the cassette while the front is switched to the radio. Kids love the spacious feel throughout the windstar, while adults appreciate the generous leg and headroom, especially in the center two bucket seats. Access to the rearmost seats is not easy unless the center seat is moved to one side. driving impressionford sells few windstars with the base 3. 0-liter engine. Its saves less than $1000 on the purchase price, it uses only slightly less fuel but does not perform nearly as well as the 3. 8-liter v6. This engine produces 200 horsepower, which puts it right at the top among minivans as one of the best all round performers. Even with a full load of passengers the windstar has enough power for safe passing. At times the transmission shifts a little abruptly but otherwise the vehicle's powertrain performs smoothly, although it is a little raucous at high revs. Steering is about right with some feedback for those who want to know what's going on. The ride is smooth thanks to the longest wheelbase of any minivan and it is certainly a lot smoother than in any sport-utility vehicle. Likewise the handling, while not as crisp a sedan, is more stable than an suv.  the sel model comes with fatter tires (225/60r16) on bigger wheels than any other windstar models, which helps improve the handling and stability of the vehicle quite substantially while adding very little noise or ride harshness.  one unique option offered for the first time on a minivan is a reverse sensing system. A beeper sounds at an increasing pace when backing up toward a solid object, such as a parked car or a child on a bicycle. It's a useful option on a vehicle of this size; rearward visibility is limited because the back of the vehicle is such a long way from the driver. summaryoverall the windstar is designed as the ultimate family vehicle with maximum versatility.  ford has improved it throughout, though the previous model's only failing was the lack of a second sliding door. While adding the second door, ford has taken the opportunity to improve safety and emissions. Bucket Seats✔ Air Conditioning
